If you have ever met my father you will know that he has no “political correctness” filter. He offers his opinion whether it has been sought after or not. In fact, I have heard him offer his opinion to people he does not know. For instance one day at the super market we were in the 10 items or less aisle. The extremely heavy set woman in front of us had between 15 and 20 items, some of which were contrary to healthy eating like soda, cookies, ice cream etc… Well Pop, as he is affectionately known, said to me, “This is the ten item aisle, maybe she wants to drop the ice cream and crap anyway, if she keeps eating like that she won’t fit down any of the aisles”! Well now that went over real well I must admit!
Over the years I have developed some of these same skills only in a politer way. On more than one occasion in an argument my ex-wife walked away and proclaimed in a frustrating manner, “As Dan sees it, the world according to Dan”! Now I would like to admit that in the heat of battle people get frustrated and say things they kind of wish they didn’t. I have always attempted to be knowledgeable but not a know it all. But at times pride gets the best of me. Fortunately, over the years I have gotten better at expressing my opinion in a way that is less controversial and more enlightening.
Which leads me to the point of this article. I have given it quite a bit of thought lately and I have decided to shift the focus of my Web-Log i.e. “Blog” to focus more on life, leadership, and self-improvement rather than limit it to a “Recovery Blog”. I truly believe that those of us in recovery are no different than any other human being with only one exception, if we drink or drug we are unpredictable. There are too many people running around this earth thinking they are different, afflicted, sick… When I hear people share that their “Disease” is flaring up or any other variation of that I cringe! Talk about passing the buck and failing to take responsibility! Well, I will leave that one alone for now.
Back to the point, “The World According to Dan”. The first thing I had to learn in my life is that “Things Change”, I change, you change, the world changes, in fact, all of our opinions change in the process. That does not make them right or wrong. As long as they do not go counter to the laws of the universe or the laws of God they are simply opinions. You may agree with some of mine or you may not, no matter lets begin a dialogue and see where we go!
