I receive quite a few calls and emails from family members seeking a solution to the quandary they face, “a loved one addicted to alcohol or drugs”. Sometimes it is heart breaking to hear the pain and stories of substance abuse. Some folks are on the brink of giving up all hope. If you ever watch the A&E show “Intervention” you have seen many of the stories that are repeated on a daily basis.
I also get to hear the stories direct from the addict or alcoholic when they arrive for treatment, I meet them in the rooms, or they call themselves. The grief they experience, feelings of remorse, exhaustion, pain and frustration is often apparent. Many of them do not comprehend how they have arrived to such a place of desperation. I remember it well myself…
But, and this is a he BUT, never give up. Never stop loving them and in the case of us addicts/alcoholics never stop loving ourselves or at the very least the potential for life! Life is good!
