In How it Works, we read that we are striving for progress and not perfection. The authors clearly recognized that we are not saints and that we as human beings would allow the idea of seeking perfection to paralyze us and offer us an out! It is amazing how we can go from one extreme to another. As an alcoholic and addict I can clearly see my tendencies today, I would either use failure to toss in the towel and drink or my failure would paralyze me into self pity and worry. Both of which if I nurture long enough could have lead me to a drink as well!
I have said it so many times we that are part of the recovery community are blessed and have an edge on other people. We are guided by people that have walked where we are walking. They are there to share their experience strength and hope, not their war story but their recovery story. Today when I share or speak my story is less about drinking and drugging and more about living and loving! All of that because as suggested, I did not take myself too seriously, when I failed and that has been often, I kept moving forward, and kept my eye on spiritual progress and not perfection! Life is good!
