“But the actual or potential alcoholic, with hardly an exception, will be absolutely unable to stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge.”
Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 39

What is an alcoholic?  We received an e-mail regarding a young man that is not sure whether he is alcoholic.  He wonders if maybe he is mentally ill.  I must say that over my years in recovery I probably heard the same thing thousands of times.  My response is always the same.  What is the difference?  If alcohol is playing a negative role in your life then do something about it.  If you start to drink alcohol and you can not or simply do not stop until you are inebriated, pass out or need to go to work you may have a problem!

I suggest get all the information into your hands and make an informed decision, give it 90 days either in a 12-step program or rehab.  If at the end of 90 days it is clear you are not alcoholic, simply go back to your old ways!

Go, Go, Go…
